Reiki: The Discovery

Reiki was developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist priest, Dr Mikao Usui who discovered a way of accessing and using this healing energy and passing the ability onto others.

The story of how Reiki was discovered is oral history, handed down from teacher to student in a very traditional way. It is told that Dr Mikao Usui was a learned scholar who taught in a Christian seminary. One day he was challenged by one of his students, who asked him if he believed in the Bible stories of Jesus’ healing, and, if so, when were they going to be taught how to heal?

It was said that upon realising that he could not teach his students any healing techniques he dedicated the rest of his life to find out how Jesus and the Buddha had been able to heal. He was said to have travelled widely and learned other languages in order to research both Christian Scriptures sacred texts. He finally ended up in a Zen Buddha’s monastery where the Abbot advised him to meditate to find the answers he was seeking. Then, at the end of a 21 day fasting retreat, Dr Usui was apparently struck by a great gift. They say the sacred symbols Dr Usui had earlier found in his research were received by him during a spiritual empowerment, transferring wisdom insight and ability and achieving enlightenment; a state of spiritual insight brought on by joining with and becoming one with the Light.

When it was over, despite weakness after his long fast, Dr Usui summoned the energy to rush down the mountain, injuring his foot in his haste. When he bent down to hold his toe he found that the bleeding stopped and the pain went away and he was healed. Later he healed a young girl’s toothache and his friend the Abbot’s arthritis; so he came to realise that he had finally discovered the healing power for which he had been searching.

About Reiki

Reiki is a gentle, non-intrusive healing technique which uses spiritual energy to treat physical ailments without using pressure, manipulation or massage.

Reiki is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy

Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura.

Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

Reiki works by allowing life force energy to flow through the practitioner to the client. The practitioner gently places his/her hands over the main energy points (chakra’s) on the client’s body.

Although there are a few positions in which the practitioner is in contact with the patient, most Reiki treatments do not involve actual touching. The practitioner holds his or her hands a few inches from the patient’s body and directs the energy field from there. The patient draws the energy from the practitioner as needed and therefore takes an active but subconscious part in the healing process.

The Reiki energy works to dissolve energy blocks and creates balance in body, mind and spirit.

Regular users of Reiki find they are more joyful, lively and their energy levels are raised.

Reiki Therapy: The Experience

The session starts with a client consultation, going through their medical record and discussing any concerns they may have and give them a chance to ask questions. I then explain what I am about to do, where I will touch them and also tell them about any possible after effects.

The client is then asked to remove their shoes, glasses, watch and any loose jewellery.

The client is invited to make themselves comfortable on the couch, chair or floor, the emphasis being on their comfort. A soft blanket is placed over the client to keep them warm as their body temperature may cool down whilst negative energy is being released during the treatment.

Soothing Reiki music is played in the background, tranquil and relaxing; creating an inviting safe and soothing environment for the client to relax.

Clients tend to close their eyes, most tend to fall into a trancelike state, or even go into a deep slumber.

Once my client is relaxed and comfortable, I stand at the top of the bed, behind the client’s head, and say an affirmation of intent for the Reiki to flow for the wellbeing of my client.
Whilst the client is comfortably lying on their back, I gently place my hands on or over non-imposing areas of their body, there is no pressure, no massage, no manipulation. I then glide my hands slowly over each chakra, taking my time at each chakra which in turn receives Reiki energies to disperse to the relevant body part.

Once the treatment is finished, the client is then gently roused by touching their shoulder and saying their name softly.

The client is offered a glass of water and advised to drink plenty of water for the next few days to help the body flush out the toxins which may have been released by the Reiki.

Some people feel energised immediately after a treatment, others feel sleepy and incredibly peaceful.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki reduces stress and pain as it infuses your body with fresh energy.

When we are relaxed and stress-free, we are able to restore our natural ability to heal.

Our bodies are designed to be self-healing, but with overwhelming amounts of stress, environmental toxins and daily exertion, they have a difficult time keeping up. Reiki assists with your self-healing by providing a fresh source of natural energy for the body to rebuild itself.

Reiki therapy promotes overall stress relief and pain reduction while you increase your general wellness. Reiki also provides symptomatic relief for those who suffer from chronic & debilitating diseases including arthritis, cancer, depression, heart attack, MS and strokes. Equally important is the reduction in recovery time from surgery that Reiki therapy facilitates.

Reiki healing health benefits include:

  • Dissolves energy blocks & creates balance in body, mind & spirit
  • Promotes relaxation
  • Increases energy
  • Reduces stress
  • Alleviate Depression or anxiety
  • Relieves physical pain & symptoms
  • Encourages the healing process after injuries or surgery
  • Complements conventional medicine and other therapies
  • Empowers in all areas of life
  • Improves self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Clears mind and enhances focus
  • Reduces some of the side effects of drugs and helps the body to recover from drug therapy after surgery and chemotherapy
  • Supports the immune system

Reiki therapy is used in Cancer treatment centres, hospitals and clinics worldwide, for reduction of nausea, accelerated healing of radiation burns and overall reduction of chemotherapy side effects.

Clients who suffer from Arthritis receive pain relief and increased mobility.

Many hospitals recommend Reiki therapy for pre and post surgery and have recorded reduced pain medication and shorter hospital stays due to quicker recovery.

Being complementary, Reiki works effectively alongside conventional healthcare and natural remedies, and may be used safely by people of all ages

Reiki Therapy also helps in the healthy maintenance of your body. Monthly sessions are recommended to facilitate and support your good health!

How many treatments are necessary?

Each client is unique and on their own personal healing journey, hence a general statement cannot be made.

It is suggested that the first few 2-4 sessions be taken close together to jump start the healing and relaxation process. A maintenance schedule of treatment can then be discussed with the client.

Reiki can take a while for the benefits of healing to be obvious as the Reiki healing may need to go deeper level to heal the emotional and spiritual aspects which in turn heal the mental and physical levels.

It may seem that physical healing is not happening as the Reiki is addressing and healing many different levels of the clients underlying conditions.

In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for his/her healing and take an active part in it.

On a conscious level we all expect to want to be healed into good health. Our motivations are generally subconscious and there may be deeper reasons why letting go of an illness, or being fully healthy could be disadvantageous or even frightening to some of us.

Each of us are unique and have our own subconscious motivations for being ill, often this is due to the causative levels being so deeply buried. Reiki will heal and work on these levels, the cause needs to come to surface layer by layer to be understood, so the healing has to take time.

Sometimes having the illness itself is the lesson which is to be learned and adapted to; and other times people are trying too hard, being so busy doing things about the illness that they have forgotten how to simply ‘Be‘.

Reiki Therapy: What's it all about?

The physical body is surrounded by a body of energy made up of fine light vibrations which is called the aura.

The aura is made up of several layers, the inner layers closest to the physical body comprise of the densest energy and each succeeding layer being of finer and higher vibrations.

If any blockages or damage to the aura are not cleared and healed they can eventually manifest themselves as physical illness or disease.

Negativity effects our aura, every negative thought, negative comment, even reading the newspapers, has a dampening effect on our energy field, lowering our body’s vibrations.

Likewise positive experiences contribute to raising our vibrations so the effects balance out for much of the time.

In addition to the aura our body contains energy centres known as chakras and a range of energy channels flow through the body called the meridians.

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel or vortex, and there are seven major chakras in the human body. Chakras are essential to our body’s energy system as they are intimately connected with our physical health.

Our chakras have an amazing beneficial effect on the whole body. Falling in love for instance, makes us sparkle and zing with colour, whereas emotional or mental traumas can have detrimental effects on our energy levels.

When chakras are healthy, balanced and open so are the linked body parts.

If a chakra becomes blocked, damaged or closed then the health of the connected body parts and systems will begin to reflect this.

Each chakra is linked with specific parts of the body and to structures within the body:

  • Crown Chakra

Located at top of the head and purple or white in colour. Treats the pineal, nervous system, mind and body associated with enlightenment, knowledge, spirituality, understanding, self realisation, unity, connection, fulfilment: I know

Meridians are the final component of the human energy body. The easiest way to describe them is they are the equivalent to the arteries and veins which carry our blood around our bodies. Meridians are the channels which carry our life-force energy, our Ki, around our body. The meridians route the energy longitudinally through the body, connecting with all of the body’s major organs. Smaller meridians criss-cross throughout the body, connecting all the parts together so that the Ki can flow everywhere.
